This was likely the event that lead to him deciding to take the role as surrogate father to zuko, so that he could mold the boy and insure he became the next firelord when the time was right.Our world has changed. Also, After the loss, he was broken with grief and spent years recovering from it, instead of being portrayed as driven. Personally I subscribe to the first idea, as to me he was the commander that always to put the troops ahead of the mission, to the point where he'd let the mission fail. Or, after his son's death he had such a profound change that he decided the fire nation needed to be stopped at any cost and became a lotus to do that. Both whispering into influential ears before this particular attack, as well actively as the commander, etc, in order to save lives, and keep balance between the nations as the avatar was missing. He was a White Lotus before the siege (probably the grand lotus) and was intentionally sabotaging the fire nation's war effort to expand.
